Pickleball in Sandwich, Massachusetts
Sandwich pickleball centers on six dedicated outdoor courts at Oak Crest Cove Park. The town sets aside three full days each week for open play and uses a color coded whiteboard to match beginners, intermediate players, and advanced players. On other days, courts are reserved through CourtReserve. Beginners also have a town lesson series, while the large organized rotation in nearby Marstons Mills provides another dependable game.
Where to Play Pickleball in Sandwich
- Oak Crest Cove Park, 70 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, has six dedicated post tension concrete pickleball courts open from dawn to dusk during the season. Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday are open play days with no reservation needed. On other days, one hour court reservations are made through CourtReserve. Sandwich residents can book 30 days ahead and nonresidents can book 21 days ahead. The park is unstaffed, has seasonal restrooms, and does not allow outside nets.
- Barnstable Pickleball and Tennis Court Complex, 760 Osterville West Barnstable Road in nearby Marstons Mills, is useful when the Sandwich open play days do not fit your schedule. Its free organized rotation welcomes visitors Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, with a 9 a.m. start in winter. Ten dedicated courts and a skill based whiteboard make it a strong nearby option for solo players.
Beginner Pickleball Lessons
New players should start with the Sandwich Recreation beginner lesson series. The adult program meets for one hour each week across a three week session at Oak Crest Cove. Current sessions are offered Tuesday at 4 p.m. or Thursday at 5 p.m., with a fee of $50 for residents and $60 for nonresidents.
After the lesson series, join open play and mark your name in green on the dry erase board to identify yourself as a beginner. That keeps the first games recreational and helps match you with suitable partners. Other individual instruction is available through the Coaches section.
Open Play and Community Pickleball
Oak Crest Cove runs open play all day Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Players add names to the first available whiteboard block, and the next complete group of four takes the next open court. Green marker indicates beginner, blue intermediate, and black advanced. The system is designed for players to mix partners and move through games, so open play is different from reserving a court for a fixed foursome.
Private play is reserved for the other days through CourtReserve. The town does not permit unauthorized lessons, tournaments, commercial events, or organized groups on the courts, so Sandwich Recreation manages the formal beginner series and any permitted special programming.
Visiting Sandwich and Looking for a Game?
If you are traveling alone, go to Oak Crest Cove on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday and add your name to the open play board. You do not need a reservation or three partners, and the marker colors help place you with an appropriate level. Bring a paddle and court shoes with nonmarking soles.
If your visit falls on another day, reserve one Oak Crest Cove court through CourtReserve and bring partners. Nonresidents may book up to 21 days ahead, and the gate code arrives with the reservation reminder. For a solo game on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, use the free morning rotation at the Barnstable complex in Marstons Mills.
